Midnight at the Boilerhouse (MatB) is The Student Workshop’s termly showcase of new writing taking place in the theatrical space that once powered the entire college. The Boilerhouse thus provides students with a powerhouse for new creative work in the field of performance. In the past we have seen play extracts from upcoming student productions, comedy sketches, rehearsed readings, performance poetry, improvisation, physical theatre and whole, self contained ten-minute plays. The opportunities that MatB has given writers and performers have been particularly highlighted in recent years, as 2008’s Max and Iván: Exposed – The Edinburgh Fringe and 2009’s Max and Iván: Televisionaries were both previewed to audiences before the popular comedic duo made the journey to the world’s biggest arts festival, gaining a cult following, sell out shows, 5* reviews and a National Student Drama Festival Emerging Artists Award for Comedy. This year we are looking to maintain MatB’s success with even more new and exciting work from our talented students. Along with the chance to see your work staged in front of a large audience, members of The Student Workshop can also direct and perform in pieces.
*Submissions for the next MatB open on the 11th of January 2012*
